Response to Intervention

The Sackets Harbor community desires to see our children succeed in reading, math, other
subject areas, and to develop appropriate social skills. It concerns us greatly when students fall behind. The faculty and staff in our school district do an excellent job of recognizing struggling learners and addressing their specific needs. However, we strive for continued improvement and development of our intervention programs.

Our goal for the 2007-2008 school year has been to begin developing a framework for Response to Intervention (RtI). RtI is a multi-step approach to providing services and interventions to struggling learners at increasing levels of intensity. We have heavily researched the topic, held many meetings, visited successful RtI schools, and we have developed a time line and framework for implementation. Our goal for the 2008-2009 school year is to begin RtI implementation in our kindergarten, first and second grades. The RtI process has the potential to limit the amount of academic failures that any student experiences and to reduce the number of students who are mistakenly identified as having learning disabilities.

A flyer entitled, “Response to Intervention (RtI): A Primer for Parents” will be given to your child to take home for you to review. I hope that you will take the time to read this
information so that you are better able to support our RtI initiative. As always, please feel free to call or email Mrs. Gaffney with questions or concerns.

Technology Integration

The Sackets Harbor Technology Committee is currently arranging a Technology Exposition to be held on May 20th from 2:00 pm – 5:00 PM. The faculty, staff, and students truly appreciate the approval of the capital project from the Sackets Harbor taxpayers last year. Part of this project will allow us to update our technology needs.

This Expo will feature technologies that our district is interested in purchasing for the 2008-2009 school year. We cordially invite the Sackets Harbor community to view the technology, speak with the vendors, and provide us with any feedback.
